What is acne and acne scars?

Acne is a common skin condition where hair follicles become clogged with oil and dead skin cells, leading to pimples, whiteheads, and blackheads. Acne scars, on the other hand, are marks left behind after the acne blemishes heal. These scars can be caused by inflammation during the healing process, resulting in either indentations or raised areas on the skin.

What causes acne

  • Excess Oil (Sebum) Production: Sebum, an oily substance that lubricates the skin and hair, can be produced in excess, contributing to clogged pores.
  • Clogged Hair Follicles: When dead skin cells and sebum accumulate in hair follicles, they can form a plug, leading to comedones (blackheads and whiteheads).
  • Bacteria: Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) is a type of bacteria that thrives in clogged pores and can trigger inflammation.
  • Inflammation: The body’s immune response to bacteria and other irritants in the clogged pores leads to inflammation, resulting in red, swollen, and painful pimples.

What causes Acne Scars:

  • Inflammation: Severe inflammation from acne lesions can damage the skin and underlying collagen, leading to scarring.
  • Abnormal Collagen Production: The body’s attempt to repair the damaged tissue may result in either too much or too little collagen production, causing either raised or depressed scars.
  • Picking or Popping Acne: This can worsen inflammation and increase the risk of scarring.
  • Severity of Acne: More severe and inflammatory acne lesions are more likely to cause scarring.
  • Delayed Treatment: Delaying treatment for inflammatory acne can also increase the risk of scarring.
  • Genetics: A person’s genetic predisposition can influence their likelihood of developing acne scars.
